Maritime Technical Services
Success Stories
Drawing from its extensive experience as a ship owner and operator, Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) provides engineering, maintenance planning, construction oversight, ship conversion management and ship inspection services. No other company in the maritime world combines our depth and breadth of nautical expertise with innovative technologies and solutions. MLL benefits not only from its own knowledge but also from its ability to leverage the capabilities of its parent company — the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, which possesses a fleet of over 1300 ships of all types and sizes, thousands of maritime subject matter experts of commercial and military experience, and an exceptional global network.
Naval Maintenance and Lifecycle Services
From design to disposal, our experienced engineers, technicians and mariners help clients prolong the lives of vessels and maritime assets, saving them time and money. We seek to balance total ownership cost, readiness and risk mitigation to meet our clients’ maintenance, modernization, and disposal needs.
Ship Concept Design
MLL can assist with the design of a ship or of an entire fleet by providing guidance to our customers and making recommendations as to the materials, parts and equipment that should be used in construction. Our comprehensive approach to vessel design, construction and operation can help lower the total cost of ownership. For example, some materials and supplies that are more costly upfront can save millions of dollars in the long run.
Preventive Maintenance Programs and Repair Planning
MLL manages more than $48 million of maintenance work each year for a fleet of more than 50 widely-diverse, public and privately-owned oceangoing ships. Vessel preservation is our daily business, and we embrace a philosophy of continuous maintenance. As a result of this approach, our commercial ships average just 0.5% off-service time annually and five years between scheduled dry dockings, despite rigorous operational tempos and minimal time in port.
In addition to our world-class afloat and ashore maintenance programs, MLL draws upon its international network to provide repair labor, industrial assistance, and certifications anywhere in the world. MLL has current, active agreements with more than 60 husbanding agents worldwide, and the global Maersk organization has more than 300 offices in over 100 countries linked by a company-wide communications system. There is virtually no navigable area of the world where MLL cannot offer rapid, expert shore support. This extensive maintenance knowledge is available to our customers, as we can teach our methodologies, help them access our network or simply handle the maintenance for their ships so they can focus on their mission.
Ship Recycling
At MLL, we believe in extending the lives of ships after they reach the ends of their operational usefulness. Our consultants use MLL's best practices to handle and dispose of hazardous wastes and ensure the maximum amount of materials is recovered while adhering to stringent environmental, health and safety standards.
Dry-docking Management
Over the years, our ships have undergone thousands of dry-docking repairs under our supervision. Our experienced and dedicated superintendents can support any client’s dry-docking project by preparing specifications, attending and supervising dry dock repairs.
Maritime Technical Consulting
MLL’s world-class technical experts, who oversee more than 20,000 ship-days of commercial and government fleet operations each year, can bring expertise and innovative ideas to virtually any project while increasing operational and energy efficiency and reducing costs.
Technical Innovative Solutions
As part of a large global shipping and logistics enterprise, MLL can access a vast intermodal and data network, as well as exclusive technical innovations. We employ technologies in the operation of our commercial fleet that can improve the maintenance of government and commercial ships. These include extensive use of voyage planning, machinery sensing and monitoring, hull coatings, waste heat recovery, hull and propeller design and modifications, and cutting-edge ship systems technology development. Every day, we advise organizations how they can improve the operation of their vessels and the overall logistics for transporting their cargoes.
Safety Compliance
Over the past 25 years, we have fine-tuned our safety standards for our own fleet and for the dozens of U.S. government ships entrusted to our care. MLL’s mature quality assurance and continuous process improvement programs include International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2000 Quality Management; ISO 14001 Environmental Management; OHSAS 18001 Occupational Safety and Health, and a mature Lean/Six Sigma program. We can leverage our capabilities to train and supervise any projects that require compliance with the highest level of safety standards.
Energy Conservation and Efficiency Practices
MLL’s parent company, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, leads the way in reducing the impact of naval transportation on the environment while reducing operating costs. We have made significant strides in reducing energy consumption, air emissions, ballast water discharges, and waste handling. Leveraging our experience with our commercial fleet, we advise and share with our customers the latest energy conservation and efficiency measures from the ship concept development phase to ship recycling. The AP Moller-Maersk Maritime Technology has made particularly notable advances in the following areas:
Power Consumption Reduction
Leveraging an extensive network of close relationships with the world’s leading equipment manufacturers, we have used state-of-the-art performance monitoring to squeeze the maximum amount of work from the minimum amount of energy.
Coatings
A leader in the use of advanced hull coatings for many years, the AP Moller-Maersk Group has a vast database of millions of ship miles of experience with virtually every brand and model of coating on the market. We can provide expert advice on which coating is optimal for any vessel in any given environment.
Shipboard energy reduction initiatives
Employing the latest best practices and the newest equipment, each of our ships is closely monitored for its total energy consumption. We can use this experience to recommend ways for any operating fleet to minimize its energy consumption.
Hull Form Optimization
We closely examine the hull forms of our existing and new build vessels through tank tests and computer modeling to ensure maximum efficiency for each unique cargo and trade route. Class- approved alterations and modifications to hull plans may result in the building yard or subsequent drydockings based on a stringent cost-benefit analysis.
Bio-fuels
Working closely with governments and private industry, we are leaders in developing and testing alternative fuels to maximize efficiency while reducing harmful emissions.
Emissions Reductions
Lowering our carbon footprint and eliminating harmful emissions is a parallel goal of all our energy efficiency initiatives. Every initiative is closely examined to ensure our choices derive the maximum environmental benefit. In 2008 alone, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group was able to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions by 9% from the previous year. We achieved this primarily through lower fuel consumption on ships and reduced flaring from platform. We can assist our customers to implement the necessary measures that will help them reduce their impact on the environment.

Project Management Services
Whether a minor ship modification project or a major multi-ship building program is needed, MLL leverages its unique combination of experience, expertise and innovation to deliver low-risk, cost-effective and reliable program management to its customers.
Shipbuilding
Although our organization is mostly known for operating ships, we have extensive experience building new and repurposed vessels. Our parent company, the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group, built several new vessels in the past year alone. We can share this knowledge with our customers by guiding them through drawings development, helping them appraise shipbuilders, supervising on-site construction of vessels, ensuring compliance with regulations, and conducting regular inspections prior to delivery.
Ship Conversions, Major Modifications and Retrofits
For more than 25 years, we have specialized in managing minor to complex conversions of all types of ships. From lengthening or heightening vessels to modifying their interiors, we have done it all. Based on the requirement specifications, we can assist at any phase of the conversion process, from developing a concept to acquiring a vessel for conversion, to managing the construction.
